Homeschool Goals by Grade Level

We had this mentioned earlier - what standard / goals do you use for each grade level your child is in?

 

As noted earlier - most states are now using Common Core as the Standard, but these are just goals as to how well a student should understand specific things before proceeding to the next year. Each school district still comes up with the curriculum to meet those goals / standards. Each parent of a home-schooled child would also have to come up with a specific curriculum for each grade level their child is in. 

 

The scriptures teach us to have specific goals and milestones we are trying to achieve RATHER than to just "run uncertainly" (1 Cor 9:26). What do you use?

 

(and I am wondering if this wouldn't be good to have as separate topics for each of the 5 core academic subjects (English, History / Government, Arts, Science, & Math)).

Every state their own requirements for high school completion.   A homeschool parent will provide a transcript (if necessary) and issue the diploma.

I looked and couldn't find standards per grade level there. Could you help by pointing to where on the site they may be?

I did, but it just gives news and nothing curriculum related - that I found for Nevada.

Click on the State (Nevada), and on the right side, under Nevada Resources, click on LAWS: How to legally homeschool in Nevada. You'll need to give your name and email address, but it will bring you to a page that lists the homeschool requirements for Nevada. It's actually not very detailed for Nevada.

You raise a very good point.

 

I found this site that peeked my interest. Seems to itemize the recommended learning outcomes for each grade level. Looks like a pretty good matrix to follow.

Seems Nevada is like Pennsylvania.  All that is required is a letter of internet and a basic educational plan.   Pennsylvania doesn't require a  specific cirriculum for each subject. Which is one of the best parts  of homeschooling.  We don't need to stick with something that doesn't work for our kids.

has typical curricula from k through 12, if one wants to know what the national goals for each grade purport to be. HOw one accomplishes these achievements depends on the chosen homeschool format.

When I took over some adult ed classes, the previous teacher had let the students "help" each other and did not time the tests. As a result, many students found that they were actually 3rd grade level readers and were discouraged. I had a third grader from Kingdom Hall come in and read from "My Book of Bible Stories," so they could get an idea what it meant to be a third grade reader. They truly enjoyed her input and felt much better about their performance and goals. The little girl is now in tenth grade and an unbaptized publisher.

The readability calculator/ scores are a good tools to gauge language  readability and  comprehension. The Flesch-Kincaid scale is a good one.

It's a good indicator not only for children but also for our Bible studies that may struggle with language. 

Here are a few examples of reading materials and their grade equivalency.

• Return to Jehovah is at grade 5.5
• Awake is grade 6
• Bible is at  grade 9
• Newspaper is at grade 11

I used a different link.  http://sarahktyler.com/code/readability.php  The name has changed and used to be http://bluecentauri.com/tools/writer/sample.php but both links go to the same page.  You can insert text and it will give you a writing grade level.  The Awake and Watchtower generally grade out at the same level as articles from the newspaper.  Some of our brochures on evolution grade out higher.

I have sat in on many iep meetings, which are concluded with statements such as: JOhnny will be on task for assigned reading 75 present of the time, and so on. Many times these goals are not met. I have never seen one that said 100 percent for any goal. HOmeschoolers send a letter of intent (what they will be studying), and they actually do complete their stated goals.

There are quite a number of MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) available. One that is recognized in NY is the PASS exam. If our student wants to take a formal HIgh School Completion test, Preparing for the Tabe covers everything.

Hi Randall, you may have looked at the  Fog scale an not the Flesch-Kincaid. The scales analyze different elements of words.
